Kudos to Theatreworks USA’s generosity in providing such outstandingly professional fare to the pre-K’s, K’s and post-K’s of NYC for the 21 st. summer season. All day long Farmer Brown hears "click clack moo, clickety clackety moo..." The cows are typing and protesting their working conditions. Anyone who reads this column, knows that I enjoy a good pun. However I am disinclined to use the publicity department’s description of this production as being – and I quote – "a hilariously moo-ving new musical about compromise." Better they should have said, udderly delightful. The world premiere performances are based on the award-winning book by Doreen Cronin and Betsy Lewin. Ages 4+ 60 minutes.

I received a newly released CD from a loyal reader of Grand Times with Your Grandkids, named Mary Kaye, composer of 14 diverting children’s songs which she sings, as well as plays, with a clarion clear Judy Collins-esque vocal style. She has verve and a diverting way of reaching the sandbox set with catchy onomatopoeic lyrics. She accompanies herself on the acoustic guitar and is backed by two rhythm men and a 22-person chorus comprised mostly of eight graders, including her two daughters, Abby and Emily. For snatches of her songs and the ability to order direct (price is $15), check out her web site: marykayemusic.com. |
